Leathernecks add all-state hurler to 2010 class

MACOMB, Ill. - Righthanded pitcher Jason Smith of Morrison, Ill. has signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Western Illinois for the 2010 season.

The signing of Smith gives Western a total of 11 new players for the 2010 team. The 2010 recruiting class includes players from California, Washington, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin and Ohio.

Smith, an Illinois All-State First-Team selection, struck out 116 batters and walked just 34 in 77.1 innings this year and compiled a record of 11-2 with a 1.09 ERA for Morrison High School. He also asserted himself well at the plate, batting .340 his senior year.

In addition to his all-state honors, he was also named the Quad Cities Athlete of the Year for the second time, was a Three Rivers Athletic Conference first-team selection for the third straight season, was a Sauk Valley news first-team selection and was named the conference player of the year for the second consecutive season.

Smith's athletic ability was also shown on the hardwood and the gridiron where he was named the conference player of the year in basketball, averaging 19.2 points per game while leading his team to a regional title, and football, where he hauled in 25 passes for 502 yards and six touchdowns.

Smith is the seventh pitcher the Leathernecks have added since the beginning of June.
