FARGO, N.D. –
No. 17 Western Illinois never trailed in its 27-22 victory over No. 6 North
Dakota State, as the Leathernecks snapped a 15-game home winning streak for the
Bison.
Donaldson
rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, recording a school
record-tying 19th 100-yard game of his career.
The
Leathernecks (4-2, 2-1) opened a 7-0 lead on their third possession of the game
when Herb Donaldson capped an 11-play, 86-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown
run. On 3rd-and-1 near midfield late in the first quarter, Donaldson
bounced off a defender and scampered for 29 yards to the NDSU 36-yard line to
set up the score. Carl Sims had a pair of completions on the drive, and Dre
Gibbs had runs of nine, 10 and 13 yards to take the Leathernecks to 1st-and-goal
at the 6-yard line.
The Bison(3-3,
1-2) immediately retaliated with a 45-yard run by Matt Voigtlander at the end
of the first quarter that gave the Bison a first down at the 11-yard line. The
Leathernecks stopped them on the next three plays, appearing to force a field
goal, but a personal foul penalty gave the Bison half the distance to the goal
and an automatic first down. Roehl carried the ball two yards into the end zone
on the very next play, tying the game at 7-7 at the 13:18 mark.
Two plays
into Western’s next possession, Matt Barr found Matt Warner over the middle for
a 75-yard gain to the 1-yard line, a career-long for both players. On 3rd-and-goal
at the 2-yard line, Donaldson crossed the goal line for his second touchdown of
the day.
On the Bison’s
first play after the ensuing kickoff, Josh Galloway forced quarterback Nick
Mertens to fumble and Travis Cherry recovered at the 25-yard line. The
Leathernecks, however, botched the snap on their first play, giving the ball right
back to the Bison who stalled near their own 40-yard line.
The Bison
brought the score to 14-10with a 30-yard field goal at the halftime buzzer. The
scoring drive was set up by a 42-yard pass reception by Kole Heckendorf on 3rd-and-6
that took the Bison to the 19-yard line. After being stopped on three downs inside
the 20, the Bison stopped the clock with their third timeout of the half with
just three seconds on the clock, facing a 4th-and-4 situation at the
13-yard line.
The two
teams traded punts to open the third quarter, but the Leathernecks added seven
points when Buddy Dudczak broke through the coverage to block NDSU’s punt and
run it in 17 yards for a touchdown and a 21-10 lead.
The Bison
returned the ensuing kickoff 57 yards to the Leathernecks 33-yard line, and a facemask
penalty on the Leathernecks gave the Bison 15 additional yards as they began
their drive at the 17-yard line. Roehl rushed into the end zone two plays later
to keep the Bison within single-digits, 21-16, despite a missed PAT.
The
Leatherneck defense forced the Bison to punt from their own end zone on their
first possession of the fourth quarter, giving the Leathernecks their best
field position of the day, starting the next drive at the NDSU 39-yard line. Previously,
they had started just one drive outside their own 20-yard line.
Barr caught
Sims racing down the sideline, and a pass interference call on the incomplete
pass put the ball at the 24-yard line. Taylor Rowan’s 41-yard field goal three
plays later put the Leathernecks up 24-16 with 11:32 remaining.
A 38-yard
completion to Heckendorf on the Bison’s very next play then put them into Western
Illinois territory at the 30-yard line, and a 34-yard touchdown pass to Jordan
Schultenover brought the Bison within two, 24-22. On the two-point conversion
attempt, wide receiver Gary Williams was stopped on the reverse in the
backfield by Tim Jackson.
The
Leathernecks marched downfield for nine plays, 38 yards and 5:52, extending
their drive with a 20-yard run by Donaldson on 3rd-and-2. Later in
the drive, a sack on 3rd-and-8 gave Rowan his longest field goal attempt of the
season, 54 yards. His first 50-yard attempt of the season was good, giving the
Leathernecks a 27-22 lead with 3:47 left on the clock.
The Bison
threatened to make their second double-digit comeback in as many weeks, working
their way into Leatherneck territory in the final minutes, but a 4th-and-15
sack by Teague Dentino at the 44-yard line gave the Leathernecks possession
with 1:48 remaining and a 5-point lead. The Leathernecks were only able to let
13 seconds tick off the clock before being forced to punt and give the Bison
possession again.
The Bison’s
final march began at their own 15-yard line with 1:26 left on the clock, but
didn’t last long as Robert Hodges intercepted their first pass attempt, across
midfield, to seal the Leathernecks’ first victory over a ranked opponent in six
tries.
