DAVENPORT, Iowa - The game was never in doubt as Western Illinois fell behind early and Iowa cruised to a 20-7 victory Tuesday evening, at Modern Woodman Park.
The Leathernecks’ (8-22) starter David Hill had all he could handle in the top of the first as the Hawkeyes (13-22) tagged him for four hits and five runs, knocking him out of the game before a single out was recorded. Another four runs came off John Sneegas courtesy of a sac fly and three-run homer and after one inning, Western trailed 9-0.
With Austin Brough on the hill, Iowa added five more in the second, which included a two-run homer. One more run was charged to Brough, coming on a single in the fourth inning that stretched the Hawkeye lead to 15-0.
“You can’t self destruct in a first inning like we did with our pitching,” head coach Stan Hyman said of the start. “It’s never a question of lack of effort or heart. I know that Hill, Sneegas and Brough give me everything they have when they take the mound and they are taking tonight as hard as anybody. “
Darren Spicer got Western on the board as he led off the fifth inning with a line drive homer to left, for his second of the season.
Iowa erased any affect of the homer, putting two runs back on the board in the home half, extending its lead to 17-1 after five innings of play.
Coming on in the sixth inning was Chris Fuchs to retire Iowa in order, and staying strong on the mound after his third save of the season Saturday.
Western got some offense going in the eighth with three consecutive singles. Jared Wolf started with a base knock to right and Drew Laidig followed with one to short. A deep fly to right off the wall from Tyler Metcalf brought home Wolf. A pair of throwing errors on separate double play ground balls allowed two more runs to cross the plate. A fielder’s choice off the bat of Lorenzo Gallaga brought home Joseph Waropay. Another error on a Cooper Stewart grounder plated a run and a wild pitch on the next offering brought home the sixth and final run of the frame, making the score 19-7.
The Hawkeyes added one final run to the board in their final at-bat, closing out the scoring at 20-7.
“Simply put,” Hyman said, “tonight’s not acceptable because we elevated all of our pitches. You can’t get the ball up in the zone to a team like Iowa. We did not make pitches and it deflated the ball club and took us completely out of the game.”
Laidig, Metcalf and Wolf each had a pair of hits in the game for the Leathernecks. With the victory, Iowa clinched a season series win over Western.
“Offensively,” Hyman continued, “if you put up seven runs in the ballgame, whether it’s late or early, it should be enough to get a win. We could have been a little sharper with our defense but we made some nice plays. In particular, Metcalf made a few nice picks at first. It’s a broken record though, and it’s proven that the broken record isn’t going to get it done.”
Scheduling conflicts from this past weekend for Iowa Wesleyan forced the cancellation of Western’s next contest, originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 22. No make up date has been announced yet for the game.
The Leathernecks return to action this weekend in Summit League play, when South Dakota State comes to town. Game one is slated for a 3 p.m. start Friday, April 24, at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
