MACOMB, Ill. Sophomore Brian Scott (Hannibal, Mo./Hannibal) led the Western Illinois men’s golf team, with a 71, to a first-place finish at the 2008 Beu/Mussatto Invitational at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course.

The Leathernecks completed the three-round tournament with a 885 (+21), while Indian Hills Community College claimed the second spot with a 903 (+39). Scott finished the two-day event with a 220 (78,71,71) in third place, with juniors Jared Steger (Bannockburn, Ill./New Trier) and Shane Kwaterski (Bailey’s Harbor, Wis./Gilbraltar), and sophomore Kyle Peterman (Sherman, Ill./Williamsville) all ended two strokes behind, tying for fifth.

“We had four guys in the top eight,” said head coach Mel Blasi. “That grouping is a really good showing for us and Brian Scott’s final round today was excellent.”

The Western Illinois Gold team finished in eighth place, with junior Austin Lambert tying for third with Scott with a 220 (77,72,71).

Austin Lambert finishing with a 220 for the gold team is really strong,” Blasi added. “He has been in the top-five throughout the season. It will be a big battle to see who the five competitors are that will play in The Summit League Championship.”

South Dakota State’s Trent Peterson claimed the individual championship with a 216 (70,74,72) and helped the Jackrabbitts to a third-place finish. Green Bay and Lindenwood rounded out the top-five.

Western travels to Champaign, Ill., to compete at the Illinois Invitational, April 11-13. The Illinois Invite will be the final tournament before the Leathernecks return home to host the 2008 Summit League Championships at Harry Mussatto Golf Course.
