Leatherneck Golf Team Listed as One of Nation?s Top 10 Stories by Golfweek

MACOMB, Ill. - Golfweek?s Lance Ringler and Ron Balick recently listed the top 10 stories from the 2005-06 men?s college golf season, and ranked Western Illinois? success at No. 10.The Leathernecks won six tournaments, including the Mid-Continent Conference championship by 13 strokes, and earned their second NCAA Regional appearance of the last three years. Western was in contention for a spot in the finals through the second round, but finished in a tie for 20th place.Head coach Mel Blasi was named Mid-Con Coach of the Year after posting a 91-27-2 head-to-head record against Division I competition. Nineteen of those 27 losses came at the regional.Next year the Leathernecks will return three of the five players who competed in the regional tournament - Ben Hermes, Nick Kwaterski and Tim Streng - all of whom will be seniors. They graduated just two of their starting five, Ryan McClintock and Dan Vojta.
